Tooele County’s Canyons Close for Winter — With New Snowmobile Access Opening in Middle Canyon

As winter settles over the Oquirrh Mountains and the higher elevations start to freeze, Tooele County Parks and Recreation officially closed the Middle Canyon and Settlement Canyon toll booths for the season as of November 2. While these closures are an annual safety necessity, this year brings a new opportunity for winter recreationists.

Seasonal Canyon Closures Now in Effect

Both Middle Canyon and Settlement Canyon are now closed to regular vehicle access. As snow accumulates, canyon roads become slick, unpredictable, and dangerous for drivers. Icy curves, drifting snow, and limited visibility create conditions that are challenging for both visitors and emergency responders.

“These closures are a critical part of keeping the public safe,” said Tooele County Parks and Recreation. “Winter weather in the canyons can change rapidly, and once snow starts building up, the terrain becomes extremely difficult to manage.”

New This Year: Limited Snowmobile Access in Middle Canyon

After listening to feedback from residents, riders, and local winter recreation groups, Tooele County Parks and Recreation is opening a small winter access point in Middle Canyon specifically for snowmobiles.

Our department heard the community loud and clear, and people wanted an opportunity to enjoy the canyon on their snowmobiles, so we’re glad to offer that option this year.

The access point will open once a sufficient snowpack is in place. Riders should take note: this is ride at your own risk access. Snow-covered roads limit how quickly emergency vehicles can reach the area, and winter terrain can be unpredictable.

Ophir Canyon and Grantsville Reservoir Remain Open Year-Round

While Middle Canyon and Settlement Canyon close each winter, Ophir Canyon and Grantsville Reservoir remain open year-round. However, winter visitors are strongly urged to use caution.

Snowy weather can quickly turn canyon travel hazardous. Even routinely traveled routes can become slippery, blocked by drifting snow, or difficult to navigate when storms roll through. Those headed to Ophir Canyon or the reservoir should be prepared for winter driving conditions and stay aware of the increased risks.

What Winter Visitors Should Know

  • Ride or travel at your own risk. Winter canyon access is not actively groomed, and conditions can vary dramatically throughout the day.
  • Emergency response is limited. Deep snow and narrow winter routes slow down response times.
  • Weather can shift fast. Check forecasts and bring proper cold-weather and safety gear.
  • Stay on designated paths and respect natural areas.

A Community-Inspired Approach to Winter Recreation

The addition of snowmobile access to Middle Canyon reflects Tooele County’s commitment to listening to residents and supporting safe, responsible outdoor recreation. Our canyons remain some of the county’s most iconic landscapes—breathtaking in every season, including winter.
